The Nightmare on Pit Lane team looked set to make a running start to this year's championship after dominating the qualifying session. However, the domination of the old Omega Fusion team was short lived. Having tried to overtake 3 back markers at the end of the main straight, Rene Smit scraped the wall and couldn't make the pass. Anxious not to lose more time he attempted again on the next corner, but broke too late, and became another victim of the concrete walls at Phoenix. Both on an interesting 4 stop D tyre strategy, Grant Reeve continued as the lone NoPL competitor, but was unfortunate to lose a possible win after being caught up in a pit entrance accident. Needing a new front wing he risked reversing into and down the pit lane to save time, and a stylish hand-brake turn momentarily threated the lives of his pit crew. Such antics saved lots of time, but the event still cost him over a minute.
Robert Schaftlein was another top contender to make a bad start this year, being caught up in another pit lane incident. This time Robert had tried to squeeze down the inside of some slow cars to get to the pit lane, but found one of them dive for the pits at the the same time and it removed him from the race. David Pennington was more true to form, but appeared to be over-driving and a spin in lap 78 may have reduced his possible finishing position. Also worth a mention are top newcomers Tero Savolainen and Reinhold Schatzer. It's tough at the top, and these guys are straight into the first race with good finishes. The Ant Hill Mob are also new, and already poised for success. Definitely people to watch....
